Algorithms for Clarity

Imaging Technology

Algorithms for Clarity is the processing pipeline that handles image reconstruction on the Vscan Air handheld probe. The probe has no cart-sized beamformer to fall back on, so software does the heavy lifting — attenuating speckle, lifting tissue-boundary contrast, and suppressing reverberation before the frame reaches the connected phone or tablet. The result is a display-ready image that a clinician in an ambulance, ICU, or remote clinic can interpret without the post-processing knobs available on a console system. Point-of-care users working in difficult body habitus or ambient lighting benefit most, because the algorithms compensate for conditions that would otherwise require repositioning the patient or adjusting cart-based settings.

Key Benefits

Why Algorithms for Clarity matters

01

Keeps small-screen reads diagnostic

A six-inch phone display gives the clinician a fraction of the real estate of a cart console. Processing that already lifts edges and suppresses speckle means the reader doesn't lose diagnostic features when the image has to shrink to fit a pocket device.

02

Tolerates suboptimal coupling and ambient light

Handheld exams happen in ambulances, emergency bays, and ICU corners where coupling gel dries out and overhead lights wash a cart screen. The pipeline compensates so users aren't stopping mid-scan to dim the lights or reseat the probe.

03

Delivers ready-to-read frames without console-style knobs

Vscan Air has no trackball, no TGC sliders, and no focal depth dial. Per-frame auto-adjustment is what makes that minimal control surface viable for clinical decisions, not just a preview of what a cart system would show.

04

Drops into any clinician's hand without hours of setup training

Internal medicine attendings, residents, and EMTs can carry the probe alongside a stethoscope because the image arrives diagnosis-ready. The algorithms absorb what a sonographer would otherwise do through presets and manual tuning.

About Algorithms for Clarity

Unlike console systems where signal processing runs on dedicated hardware, the Vscan Air offloads reconstruction to the paired mobile device and to an embedded pipeline that applies AI-trained noise and contrast adjustments in real time. The algorithms sample each frame, estimate speckle patterns characteristic of ultrasound noise, and selectively attenuate them without flattening the underlying tissue texture. A second pass sharpens the contrast step between adjacent structures so that vessel walls, pleural lines, and fluid pockets register distinctly on a phone screen. Because the probe is handheld and scanning conditions vary widely — bedside lighting, patient motion, suboptimal coupling — the adjustments recalculate frame by frame rather than running a one-time preset. Clinicians who rely on Vscan Air for trauma FAST scans, lung sliding, or bladder volume reach diagnostic confidence faster than they would from a raw unprocessed handheld feed. Standard B-mode controls remain available for users who want manual override.
