HDlive Silhouette

OB/GYN

HDlive Silhouette is a 3D/4D rendering mode within GE's HDlive technology family that creates a translucent, see-through view of anatomy. While standard HDlive renders photorealistic surface images using a virtual light source, HDlive Silhouette projects that light through the tissue, producing a silhouette effect that reveals internal structures beneath the surface. In obstetric imaging, this means clinicians can visualize the fetal skeleton, internal organs, and fluid-filled structures simultaneously with the outer body surface. The adjustable transparency control lets sonographers dial in the exact degree of see-through needed for each clinical situation, from a subtle hint of deeper anatomy to a fully translucent skeletal view.

Key Benefits

Why HDlive Silhouette matters

01

Simultaneous surface and internal anatomy in one view

The translucent rendering shows the fetal skeleton, organs, and fluid spaces within the context of the outer body surface. Clinicians assess both layers at once rather than switching between 2D cross-sections and 3D surface renders.

02

Improved skeletal survey and anomaly detection

Fetal bones rendered within the soft tissue silhouette make it easier to evaluate limb length, spinal alignment, rib morphology, and facial bone structure. Skeletal dysplasias and spinal defects are visible in anatomical context.

03

Adjustable transparency for clinical flexibility

The transparency slider lets sonographers control exactly how much internal anatomy is visible. A subtle transparency highlights deep landmarks while preserving surface context; full transparency creates a skeletal view for detailed bone assessment.

04

Intuitive imagery for parent communication

The silhouette view creates striking, easy-to-understand images of fetal anatomy. Parents can see their baby's features and skeletal structure in a way that standard 2D or surface-only 3D images do not convey, improving the prenatal bonding experience and making it easier for clinicians to explain findings.

About HDlive Silhouette

HDlive Silhouette changes the way GE's rendering engine handles light within a 3D/4D volume. Standard HDlive illuminates surfaces and creates shadows for a realistic external view. Silhouette instead transmits light through the tissue volume, producing a translucent rendering that shows outer contours and selected internal structures at the same time. The operator can adjust transparency to emphasize surface anatomy, deeper anatomy, or a balance of both. In obstetric imaging, this is especially useful for evaluating skeletal relationships, limb position, spine contour, and facial structures without abandoning the 3D context. Because internal anatomy remains visible inside the rendered volume, the tool can make some structural abnormalities easier to explain to families and easier to document for referring clinicians. It is most valuable when fetal position and fluid windows are favorable enough to support high-quality volume acquisition.
