GE Ultrasound Feature

HDlive Studio+

OB/GYN

HDlive Studio+ is GE's premium rendering technology for 3D and 4D ultrasound, available on the Voluson Expert platform. It goes beyond standard surface rendering by giving clinicians full control over virtual light source positioning, shadow depth, and tissue transparency. These controls allow sonographers to highlight specific anatomical details, reveal structures hidden by shadows in standard rendering, and create photorealistic views of fetal anatomy that aid in anomaly detection. The lifelike images also improve parent communication during OB exams by making fetal features immediately recognizable.

Key Benefits

Why HDlive Studio+ matters

01

Adjustable virtual lighting reveals hidden anatomy

Moving the virtual light source and adjusting shadow depth lets clinicians reveal structures that fixed-angle rendering obscures. A fetal hand covering the face, overlapping limbs, or subtle surface irregularities become visible by simply changing the light position.

02

Photorealistic images that improve parent engagement

The lifelike rendering quality makes fetal features immediately recognizable to parents. This improves the prenatal bonding experience and makes it easier for clinicians to explain findings, whether normal anatomy or detected anomalies.

03

Tissue transparency for layered anatomical assessment

Variable transparency controls let clinicians peel away superficial structures to visualize deeper anatomy while maintaining spatial relationships. This is valuable for placental evaluation, complex fetal positioning, and structural heart assessment.

04

Post-processing flexibility with stored volumes

HDlive Studio+ rendering can be applied to previously acquired volume data, not just live scanning. Clinicians can optimize views and explore different rendering angles after the exam, without needing the patient present.

About HDlive Studio+

Standard 3D ultrasound rendering applies a fixed virtual light source to volume data, producing a single-perspective surface view. HDlive Studio+ introduces a movable virtual light source, adjustable shadow intensity, and variable tissue transparency, giving the clinician control over how the volume data is displayed. By repositioning the light, a sonographer can reveal facial features obscured by a hand, visualize the depth relationship between overlapping structures, or highlight subtle surface abnormalities that a fixed-angle render might miss. The tissue transparency control allows progressive removal of superficial layers to visualize deeper anatomy without losing spatial context. In clinical practice, this is valuable for evaluating fetal face and limb anomalies, placental assessment, and complex structural heart views. HDlive Studio+ supports both real-time rendering during the scan and post-processing of stored volumes, giving clinicians flexibility to optimize views after the patient has left. On the Voluson Expert, the rendering engine takes advantage of the system's processing power to deliver smooth, artifact-free 4D sequences at clinical frame rates.
