Multi-mode

Imaging Technology

Multi-mode on the GE Vscan Air CL gives clinicians access to four imaging modes from a single wireless handheld probe: B-mode for anatomical imaging, Color Doppler for blood flow mapping, Pulsed Wave (PW) Doppler for velocity measurements, and M-mode for motion analysis over time. Having all four modes in a pocket-sized device means clinicians can perform cardiac, abdominal, vascular, and lung assessments at the bedside without switching to a cart-based system. This is a notable capability for a handheld ultrasound, where many competing devices offer only B-mode and Color Doppler.

Key Benefits

Why Multi-mode matters

01

Assess cardiac function, flow, and motion from one handheld device

B-mode shows chamber anatomy, Color Doppler reveals valve regurgitation, PW Doppler measures flow velocities, and M-mode tracks valve and wall motion. A single Vscan Air CL handles the full cardiac screening workflow at the bedside.

02

Quantify blood flow velocity without a cart-based system

PW Doppler on a handheld device is uncommon. The Vscan Air CL lets clinicians measure peak velocities and calculate hemodynamic indices on the spot, supporting clinical decisions that would otherwise wait for a formal ultrasound study.

03

Dual-probe design covers deep and superficial anatomy

The Vscan Air CL pairs a phased array and linear array in one wireless probe. Combined with all four imaging modes, clinicians scan from deep abdominal structures to superficial vessels and nerves without changing devices.

04

Reduce referrals to formal imaging for screening-level questions

When a bedside assessment with four imaging modes can answer the clinical question, patients avoid the scheduling delay and cost of a formal ultrasound study. This is especially valuable in rural settings and facilities without on-site sonography staff.

About Multi-mode

The Vscan Air CL's Multi-mode capability packs four distinct imaging modes into a device that weighs under 310 grams. B-mode provides the standard grayscale anatomical view used in virtually every ultrasound application. Color Doppler overlays directional blood flow information on the B-mode image, essential for cardiac valve assessment, carotid screening, and identifying vascular pathology. Pulsed Wave Doppler adds quantitative flow velocity measurements, allowing clinicians to calculate peak velocities, resistive indices, and other hemodynamic parameters directly on the handheld. M-mode displays motion over time along a single scan line, used primarily for cardiac measurements like mitral valve excursion, IVC collapsibility, and fetal heart rate. Together, these four modes cover the clinical assessment needs that previously required a cart-based system. For hospitalists performing bedside cardiac assessments, emergency physicians evaluating undifferentiated hypotension, or primary care providers screening for DVT, Multi-mode eliminates the gap between what a handheld can do and what the clinical question demands.
