SonoBiometry

OB/GYN

SonoBiometry is GE's AI-driven automated fetal biometry tool available on Versana and Voluson ultrasound systems. It automatically identifies standard fetal measurement planes and places calipers for biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL). These four measurements are the foundation of every routine obstetric exam, used to estimate fetal age and weight and to track growth against standardized percentile charts. SonoBiometry reduces the time sonographers spend on manual caliper placement and improves measurement consistency across different operators, which is critical for serial growth monitoring where small measurement variations can change clinical interpretation.

Key Benefits

Why SonoBiometry matters

01

Automated caliper placement on four core fetal measurements

SonoBiometry identifies BPD, HC, AC, and FL landmarks and places calipers automatically. The sonographer confirms or adjusts rather than placing each caliper from scratch, cutting biometry measurement time by several minutes per exam.

02

Reduced inter-operator measurement variability

Manual caliper placement varies between sonographers, which is a real problem when different operators measure the same fetus across serial visits. SonoBiometry applies consistent landmark detection, reducing the measurement scatter that can trigger false growth restriction or macrosomia flags.

03

Real-time growth chart comparison during the scan

Measurements automatically plot against standard growth curves as they are taken. The sonographer sees percentile rankings in real time rather than calculating them after the exam, allowing immediate identification of measurements that fall outside normal ranges.

04

Faster OB exams support higher patient volumes

In busy OB/GYN practices performing 15-25 obstetric scans per day, saving 2-3 minutes of biometry time per exam adds up to 30-75 minutes of recovered schedule capacity daily. SonoBiometry delivers this time savings without reducing measurement quality.

About SonoBiometry

Fetal biometry is performed at virtually every obstetric ultrasound after the first trimester. The four core measurements (BPD, HC, AC, and FL) are used to calculate estimated fetal weight, assess gestational age, and plot growth percentiles. Accurate biometry depends on two things: acquiring the correct measurement plane and placing calipers precisely. Both steps are operator-dependent and introduce variability. SonoBiometry uses trained AI algorithms to recognize when the sonographer has acquired an acceptable measurement plane and then automatically places calipers at the correct anatomical landmarks. For head circumference, it identifies the elliptical outline of the fetal skull in the correct axial plane. For femur length, it detects the ossified diaphysis endpoints. The system compares each measurement against published growth charts and calculates estimated fetal weight using standard formulas (Hadlock and others). Results display in real time, allowing the sonographer to accept, adjust, or re-acquire. By standardizing caliper placement, SonoBiometry reduces the 5-10% inter-operator variability that is common in manual biometry, making serial growth assessments more reliable across visits and across different sonographers in the same practice.
