GE 12S-D

Built for pediatric and neonatal cardiac specialists, the 12S-D pairs a wide 3.0–12.0 MHz bandwidth with a small-aperture phased array design. The high upper frequency delivers the axial resolution needed to delineate valvular anatomy and septal defects in neonates, while the lower range maintains penetration in older pediatric patients. A 105-degree sector angle covers standard parasternal and apical views from a footprint sized for rib spaces as narrow as premature infants.

Clinical Applications

Applications

Pediatric Echocardiography

Optimized for transthoracic echo in infants and children, the 12S-D resolves endocardial borders, valve leaflets, and septal anatomy at frame rates sufficient for elevated pediatric heart rates. The compact footprint fits between narrow rib spaces, and the broad bandwidth supports both B-mode structural assessment and color Doppler flow mapping of congenital defects.

Neonatal Cardiac Imaging

In the NICU, the 12S-D provides the resolution required to assess patent ductus arteriosus, atrial and ventricular septal defects, and cardiac function in premature neonates. The high-frequency range delivers the near-field detail critical for structures only millimeters in size, while PW Doppler quantifies shunt velocities and diastolic function.

Fetal Cardiac Assessment

The 12S-D supports fetal echocardiography when transabdominal access allows, providing detailed four-chamber views and outflow tract evaluation. Its high sensitivity to low-velocity flow aids in detecting regurgitant jets and assessing cardiac rhythm abnormalities in utero.
