GE P8D

The P8D is a continuous-wave Doppler pencil transducer operating at 8 MHz for non-imaging blood flow velocity measurement. The split-crystal design separates transmit and receive elements for uninterrupted CW Doppler signal acquisition without range gating or depth limitation. This makes the P8D the tool of choice for peripheral vascular labs measuring peak systolic velocities in carotid, femoral, and tibial arteries on LOGIQ P9, P10, and E9 systems.

Clinical Applications

Applications

Peripheral Vascular Assessment

CW Doppler captures peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities in the carotid, femoral, popliteal, and tibial arteries for stenosis grading and ankle-brachial index calculation. The 8 MHz frequency targets superficial peripheral vessels with strong signal-to-noise ratio. Split-crystal architecture maintains continuous signal acquisition regardless of flow depth, critical for detecting high-velocity jets at stenotic segments.

Cardiac Hemodynamics

CW Doppler through the P8D measures high-velocity flows across stenotic or regurgitant heart valves where pulsed-wave Doppler aliases. Peak velocity data feeds into simplified Bernoulli calculations for pressure gradient estimation across aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves. The pencil form factor allows free-hand angulation to align the Doppler beam with the flow jet direction.

Intraoperative Flow Confirmation

The compact pencil form factor and non-imaging CW signal make the P8D a quick verification tool during vascular surgery. Surgeons confirm vessel patency and flow direction in bypass grafts and after endarterectomy without full imaging setup. The audible Doppler output provides immediate feedback on flow quality at the operative site.
